Do’s and Don’ts for Preparing Your Quilt
Deanna wants every quilt to look its best when it’s finished. To help her deliver the highest quality results, please review these preparation guidelines before sending your quilt.
Preparing Your Quilt Top & Backing
- The quilt top should be clean, pressed, and trimmed to its final finished size.
- The backing fabric should be ironed before sending. If pieced, press all seams open.
- Trim any loose threads and ensure all seams are secure.
- Remove pins, buttons, or embellishments.
- The quilt top must lie flat. Measure across the top, bottom, and center to confirm consistent dimensions. Uneven measurements can result in puckers or an unsquared quilt.
- Quilt top, batting, and backing should be provided as three separate pieces, since each is loaded individually.
- Batting and backing should be 5-8 inches larger than the quilt top in both width and length.
- If you prewash your quilt top, Deanna strongly recommends prewashing your backing as well.
Important Disclaimers
Fullness Disclaimer:
Excess fullness or puckers in the quilt top cannot be completely “quilted out.” While every effort is made for smooth results, puckers or tucks may still appear. Significant fullness in borders can cause corners not to be square. The flatter the quilt top, the better the finished results.
Mechanical Disclaimer:
Longarm machines are highly reliable, but they are still mechanical devices. While rare, occasional mechanical issues may arise and could cause minor damage to a quilt top or backing. Deanna takes every precaution to prevent this, but it’s important to understand the possibility.
